Selecting the right joinery

Whether you are renovating or having a new build, well selected joinery will give your property a stylish look that will impress your friends and family. Your selection should depend on the style of home you’re building. Wood generally suits older homes and newer homes can take either wood or aluminium. There are also ways of combining both wood and aluminium into one fitting. uPVC is a newer option to the market and shouldn’t be discounted as it is a durable and an attractive alternative.

When comparing the prices of aluminium, timber, and uPVC joinery the general 'rule of thumb' is that timber and uPVC joinery are more expensive than aluminium. The price difference can vary depending on the configuration of joinery required.

Timber Joinery

Timber joinery is timeless in appearance and will suit modern architectural or traditional homes. Whether you want to bring out the warm earthy tones with a stain, or add a splash of colour with paint, timber joinery can be finished to suit your environment.

In New Zealand we use ‘R Values’ to measure the heat loss factor in certain parts of a building such as walls, roof and windows. The Building Code indicates that vertical glazing should have an ‘R Value’ of not less than 0.26.

Timber framed joinery has better insulating properties and when used with ‘Low E’ laminated glass, an R Value of 0.27 is achieved. Double glazed timber framed windows with standard annealed glass have an R value of 0.36.

As a traditional joinery material, it is less durable and should be treated and painted for weathertightness to reduce swelling and shrinkage when exposed to the New Zealand weather conditions. It does require regular maintenance but on the positive, with proper maintenance the lifespan of windows and doors can extend to more than 100 years.

Composite timber-aluminium Joinery

Composite timber-aluminium windows are better insulators than aluminium. Aluminium sits outside and is joined to the internal timber facing with a moisture barrier. They combine durability with a timber look for inside areas.

ALTI was the pioneer in composite timber-aluminium Joinery. Their range of joinery includes bifold windows and doors, french doors, casement and awning Windows. They can be used in a variety of applications such as renovations or new builds.

The cost of composite timber-aluminium joinery is from $550 per meter square.

uPVC Joinery

uPVC is a man-made plastic which contains PVC mixed with several other ingredients to produce the final plastic material that becomes the uPVC (Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride) profiles that some window frames are made of.

The “U” means it is unplasticized and, therefore, more rigid than the very soft, plasticised PVC that your kitchen floor vinyl is made from. The rigidity of uPVC window frames is usually improved in the factory by inserting metal stiffeners into the window frames before they are assembled.

Another hugely appealing feature of uPVC is that it is remarkably low maintenance. Aluminium is resilient, but still needs attention every now and then. On the other hand, uPVC never rots, flakes, rusts or fades. Apart from a quick wipe with a cloth to keep it clean, uPVC requires virtually no maintenance making it convenient and freeing up your precious time.

Installation and waterproofing of uPVC joinery are similar to typical aluminium windows and doors which are designed for timber structured buildings.

An example indicative cost for uPVC windows and doors is from Homerite who have a BRANZ appraised product for the New Zealand conditions. Their costs are from $350 to $450 per meter square for a typical design with flanges and timber reveal liners pre-fitted. However, costs will vary with the choice of fittings. For example it will cost more for German types of windows and doors such as tilt and turn windows, tilt and sliding doors and/or high performance glass such as Low E glass or laminated glass.

If you are purchasing uPVC windows or doors, make sure the joinery comes with a certificate of compliance with the uPVC Standard for New Zealand conditions.

Aluminium Joinery

Aluminium is the most common framing material in New Zealand. It is light, strong, durable and low maintenance. However, aluminium is a poor insulator (metal conducts heat). You should choose aluminium framing products with thermal breaks (which place insulation between the interior and exterior part of the frame) or combine aluminium combined with other materials.

Aluminium inserts are an alternative option for a renovation that has timber windows. Inserts are a cost effective solution for saving money whilst reaping the benefits of new double glazed windows and retaining the look of your home. An insert window replaces your existing timber sash with double glazed aluminium sash and leaves the timber frame intact. This is ideal to make your home warmer and drier whilst retaining the look of your home.

Whether you are renovating or new build, there is a wide range of aluminium joinery to choose from - Eurosliders, stackers, bifolds, awning windows, opening roof lights… the choice is yours.

Aluminium joinery is protected by either anodising or powder coating. However, even with these protective treatments the joinery will still require maintenance. It is advisable that maintenance cleaning to preserve the surface appearance should start as soon as the joinery is installed. Rain-washing aids some of this cleaning but some areas such as under over-hanging eaves, will not be exposed to rain and a proactive cleaning routine should be followed. In essance aluminium should be cleaned as often as the glass.

Double Glazing

Changes to the energy efficiency clause (H1) of the NZ Building Code mean that double glazing will be used in most houses in New Zealand. .

You can still enjoy large windows and doors offering great views and indoor /outdoor living at its very best while benefiting from energy savings, reduced condensation and a year round healthier home. The problem is that windows are often “thermal holes” accounting for up to 35% of a home’s heat or air-conditioning energy loss via the windows.

Double glazing offers some sound dampening qualities but the performance is critically dependent on the width of the airspace. More important are its thermal advantages. In the summer, double glazing reduces heat and UV entry while in winter it provides good light levels and reduces outward heat loss.

Double glazing can also be retro-fitted into aluminium or timber joinery. Retro-fitting double glazing is from $300 per meter square.

Joinery Character & appearance

Colours and finishes vary with types of framing. Timber has many options while aluminium has a wide range of colour choices and uPVC is generally limited in choices.
